"TRIAL BY WATER" AND "TRIAL BY FIRE" FROM MOZART'S OPERA "THE MAGIC FLUTE" IN THE LOBBY OF THE HOTEL PAPAGENO
In the midst of their ordeals, Tamino, son of the king, and Pamina, daughter of the Queen of the Night, must submit tot rails by water and by fire.
Inspired by Mozart's music, painter Friedrich Danielis conceived his "Magic Flute Project", an attempt to reproduce in 12 gouaches something which has enchanted people for more than two centuries. He attempts to capture visually, what music allows us to feel and comprehend. His colours reflect the mystical, the non-translatable elements of Mozart's message.
Danielis designed two gouaches each for the trials by water and fire. These were conceived as playing an integral role in the re-design of a wall of tinted industrial glass in the interior courtyard of the Hotel Papageno. With the aid of computer technology, two of the designs were successfully enlarged true-to-scale and applied to portions of the glass wall with its late Art Deco gridwork, thus giving our foyer its very characteristic note.
Our gratitude to art.
