History & Philosophy
The name of the hotel evokes the image of Papageno, the bird-catcher from W.A. Mozart's exquisite composition, "The Magic Flute": more than 210 years ago, this masterpiece of operatic art received its premiere at a theatre sadly no longer in existence, the "Freihaus-Theater auf der Wieden", once located very close to today's hotel.
Our building, which was constructed in the 1920's, evinces distinctive Jugendstil & Art Deco elements, these also providing the framework for the hotel itself. Our rooms are spread across a number of floors, in a building which also houses doctors, lawyers, tax accountants, insurance companies and the offices of other businesses. Which also adds to the typical Viennese ambience of our hotel. In 1985, the hotel was taken over by its current owner, who gave it the name we know today.
