The Vienna Prater is a very expansive public park in Vienna's 2nd district, boasting wide areas of meadows even to this day. When people outside of Vienna speak of the "Prater", they are generally thinking of the more famous amusement park. This is located on the western corner of the grounds and represents only an insignificant segment of the Prater's  6 km² in total area.

The name "Prater" probably has its roots in "pratum" or "prado" (lat. for "field"), though there are other, yet far less probable explanations for the name.
