St. Stephen's Cathedral (Steffl)

20-minute walk from the Hotel Papageno.

St. Stephen's Cathedral, located on the Stephansplatz, cathedral church since 1365, cathedral since 1469/1479 and, since 1723,  metropolitan church of the Archbishop of Vienna. Affectionately nicknamed "Steffl" by the Viennese, this cathedral is very much the emblem of Vienna. It is named after St. Stephen, held to be the first Christian martyr.

The structure is 107 metres long and 34 metres wide. The cathedral is one of the most important Gothic buildings in Austria. Parts of the late-Romanesque building from 1230/40-1263 are still preserved. It possesses four towers: the highest of these is the South Tower at a height of 136.4 metres, the North Tower was never completed and is only 68 metres high. To the left and right of the main entrance we find the two "Heathen Towers", which are about 65 metres tall.  In the former Austro-Hungary, no church was permitted to be built taller than the South Tower.

The South Tower is an architectural masterpiece of its time - despite its remarkable height, the foundation is actually fewer than 4 metres deep. In addition, it is completely free-standing and not connected to the main body of the church. The South Tower houses a total of 18 bells, only 13 of which are fully functional, these providing the main chimes for St. Stephen's. The Pummerin, second-biggest active church bell in Europe, is located in the North Tower beneath a dome which dates back to the Renaissance.
